As India enters the festive season, the stock markets are gearing up for the annual Muhurat Trading session, a special one-hour event held on Diwali.

What is Muhurat Trading?

'Muhurat' signifies an auspicious time based on planetary alignments, believed to bring good fortune. Each year, the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) host this special trading session during Diwali, marking the start of the new financial year in accordance with the Hindu calendar.

This year’s session, coinciding with Laxmi Pujan—a festival celebrating wealth and prosperity—ushers in Samvat 2081. Investors participate in welcoming good fortune and initiating a new trading year.

Date and Time for Muhurat Trading 2024

While the BSE and NSE have not yet released the exact timings for this year's Muhurat Trading, they have confirmed that it will be held on November 1, 2024, in celebration of Diwali and Laxmi Pujan. The specific trading hours will be announced closer to the date.

Traders should note that all intraday positions will be automatically squared off 15 minutes before the session ends, requiring thoughtful planning for those making same-day trades.

Why is Muhurat Trading Important?

For stockbrokers in India, Diwali marks the start of their financial new year. Many believe that buying stocks during Muhurat Trading brings prosperity for the year ahead. It’s also an opportunity to diversify portfolios and open new settlement accounts. While primarily symbolic, this session sees active participation, with experienced investors adjusting their holdings. Market volatility is common due to the short trading window.

Muhurat Trading is more than just a market event—it embodies optimism and growth, fostering confidence and symbolising the spirit of prosperity for the upcoming year. As November 1 approaches, both seasoned investors and newcomers look forward to this festive market tradition.
